heath had steeze
The most famous West Australian skater of all time, was probably not the best on the board, but he oozed charisma like no one else. Heath Ledger left us a while back, and it always seemed odd to me that no one has covered his skating. Over at ESPN a friend of Heath's (Griffin Collins) talks about time with him and their foray into Dogtown's past. RIP Heath. You truly were a good egg.

Off Flat Stanley
A final post for the year, featuring what may well be one of the finest photos of all time. What we have here is a magical fusion of steeze. It represents a union between two of the most stylish Australian skaters of all time. In 1999 Andrew Currie snapped this B&W uphill frontside k-grind of Kye Stanley’s in downtown Sydney. It was published in a Slam “Avant Garde” gallery late last century. Kye had no doubt just had another all-nighter with Davo. Perfect poise, great shapes, huge snaps and all white outfit whilst rocking some clogs of yesteryear. Yew! Happy Yew Near from Staple!

Crail love
Aaron Meza is a legend, not only did he manage to capture the pioneering of street skating by the Girl Massife in classics such as Goldfish and Mouse, and then go on to turn Skateboarder Mag into new levels of awesome, but he has linked to our mag from the skater's New Testament: CrailTap. If you are here as a result of this linkage, and are looking for the Brophy piece, click on the issue 3 thumbnail over on the left there

Badgie Cam
Everyones favorite member of the Weasel family, the Badger (Harry Clark) is probably one of my favorite skaters... I once saw him caveman-jump up 5 stairs to start a line, he is pretty unique to say the least. As well as ripping in a sideways position he is also a true skate lurker. The Potter Chronicles Pt.1 is his first digi cam video and has some epic lurk footage of many sessions that have gone down in recent times. Enjoy.

"Little Wednesday is some kind of prequel to the 1970s surf movie 'Big Wednesday'". Swedish-Fremantle transplant now living in London aka Gustav Eden and a bunch of London rippers have a new site up called Little Wednesday. They have RAD little clips mostly filmed on phones and digi cameras... makes me want to go skate even more than watching mindfield extras again. check it out.

Barb Bolt's techniques
In issue 4 we did a Studio Visit with Barbara Bolt as she was preparing for her solo exhibition; NEON, at Catherine Asquith Gallery, Melbourne. During this visit we got to witness her unique and fluid painting style first hand which was truly intriguing. This clip is an extract from a 2008 short documentary Neon Blue. I think it gives a nice insight into her working practice as you get to see her in action, throwing paint around and tipping the canvass manipulating it into an image. Directed & Produced by David Liu & Chris Pahlow. Music by Nat Bartsch.

Berlin
I am currently in Paris eating buttery bread and what-not. I am heading to Berlin next week, I can't wait to look out my old window . Strangely enough for a Perth mag, Berlin was a bit of a creative starting point for staple. Morgan and I at completely different times on different trips to Berlin came across a skate zine called Anzeige Berlin. Anzeige is a really epic little mag and flicking through it you can tell it is has had big influence on staple. You can check out some scans of Anzeige Berlin's pages from the link below. Salut.

Stage two: proof sign-off
Next step in the mix is getting the proof back from the printers. Its pretty great seeing the thing that has been living within a computer screen for months physically printed. By this stage typos, alignment and design issues should have been ironed out. The physical proof is mainly to combat colour shifts that happen when moving from computer screen to paper and artwork setup problems. Also, when seeing the mag spread out like this sometimes you see issues with the flow of the mag and how some spreads look together resulting in the need to reshuffle images and text. Below is an image of the issue 1 proof sheet. Staple 3 has been signed off and is whirring around a printing factory out in the suburbs of Melbourne, more photos from its journey coming soon.
